If you are running a Facebook Fan page for you business I’m sure you’ve been sharing to your followers and working diligently to increase the fan base. Facebook can be a valuable outlet for Brand messaging but you can say goodbye to your Facebook page at any time if you aren’t following the rules.
Rules? Yes there are Facebook Fan Page rules which you have already agreed to when you ticked a box saying you’ve read and agree to the terms and conditions upon initiation of your page. Of course many of us didn’t read the rules in detail, nor have we kept up on the changes which Facebook has made to their Facebook Page Terms document as recently as July 2014.
As a brand who runs a Facebook Fan page you simply MUST stay up to date on this information or face the wrath of Facebook. Facebook clearly states “We reserve the right to reject or remove Pages for any reason.” This isn’t a mild warning, it’s happening! Pages are being shut down because of infractions.
While not every page who is breaking the rules is being shut down, is it really worth the risk? That call is up to you but if you value your following, you will want to ensure your page fits the requirements.
Facebook Promotion Rules
As a Facebook Fan page owner, one of the most commonly used strategies to build new followers and engagement is to run a giveaway or contest promotion. Things you MUST remember:
- Include complete rules and regulations including: eligibility requirements (age/location etc.) and compliance with any regulatory bodies.
- Exclude Facebook from responsibility and have entrants acknowledge that fact: Include a disclaimer that releases Facebook of any responsibility which entrants must acknowledge – eg: “This promotion is in no way sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Facebook. By entering you acknowledge understanding of this.”. This is best put on your page/s or the third party app and in your terms and conditions on your website.
- Personal timelines cannot be used as entries. Do not ask entrants to share the giveaway on their own timelines or those of others.
Upcoming Changes for Facebook Fan Page Giveaways
In early August of this year Facebook announced upcoming changes to their third-party developer blog including an update to their platform policy that affects third-party apps built on their platform which you can see HERE.
The most important change surrounds surrounding the ability to incentivize people using social plugins to like a page.
You must not incentivize people to use social plugins or to like a Page. This includes offering rewards, or gating apps or app content based on whether or not a person has liked a Page. It remains acceptable to incentivize people to login to your app, checkin at a place or enter a promotion on your app’s Page. To ensure quality connections and help businesses reach the people who matter to them, we want people to like Pages because they want to connect and hear from the business, not because of artificial incentives. We believe this update will benefit people and advertisers alike.
Today if you’re using a third-party app to run a giveaway, you can select a feature which requires people to be a fan of your page before they qualify to enter.
As of November 5th Facebook is removing this away from all developers. This means that both fans and non-fans of your Facebook page will be applicable to enter giveaways.
These are just a few of the rules within the Facebook Terms of Service, we at SJ Consulting suggest you familiarize yourself with them if you are running a Facebook page.
